You're in Fort Pierce, you slide the key in, and nothing happens — it won't budge, or it turns but the engine stays silent. Before you call a tow truck, call a locksmith near you: most ignition problems are a locksmith's job, and they can be fixed wherever your car sits — your driveway, a parking lot, or the side of the road. PSL Locksmith's mobile workshop carries the tools to diagnose, repair, or replace your ignition on the spot.
Signs your ignition needs a locksmith
- The key won't turn in the ignition at all
- The key is stuck in the ignition and won't come out
- The key broke off inside the ignition cylinder
- The ignition cylinder spins freely without catching
- The key turns but the car won't start
- You have to jiggle the key harder every time to get it to work
If any of these sound familiar, the problem is usually the key or the ignition cylinder itself — both things a qualified locksmith in Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce handles every day. See also our automotive locksmith services.
Why car ignitions fail
Ignition cylinders are mechanical parts, and they wear out. The most common causes we see across the Treasure Coast:
- Worn key: years of use wear down the key's cuts until it can no longer lift the cylinder's wafers correctly.
- Worn wafers inside the cylinder: the tiny tumblers wear down and stop aligning.
- Steering-wheel lock binding: pressure on the steering column locks the cylinder — sometimes a firm turn of the wheel while turning the key frees it, but don't force it.
- Florida heat, humidity, and dust: accelerate wear and corrosion inside the cylinder.
- A heavy keychain: constant weight hanging from the ignition strains the cylinder over time.
What NOT to do when your key won't turn
- Don't force the key. Forcing it can snap the key off inside the cylinder, turning a straightforward repair into a bigger job.
- Don't keep cranking aggressively — it won't fix a worn cylinder and can damage it further.
- Don't let anyone drill out the ignition as a first resort. Most ignitions can be repaired or replaced cleanly, without damage to your steering column or dashboard.
How PSL Locksmith repairs ignitions on-site in Fort Pierce
Our 24/7 emergency mobile service covers Fort Pierce day and night. Here's what happens when we arrive:
- Diagnose: we determine whether the problem is the key, the ignition cylinder, or the steering lock — so you only pay for the fix you actually need.
- Repair or replace: many ignition cylinders can be repaired; when replacement is the right call, we install a new cylinder matched to your vehicle.
- New keys on the spot: we cut and program replacement keys right there — including transponder keys and key fobs. That's car key replacement without the dealership trip or the tow. (More: new key fob programming.)
- Test before we leave: we verify the new key turns smoothly and starts the car every time.
Repair or replace? An honest answer
Sometimes a worn key is the whole story — a fresh, precisely cut key solves it. Sometimes the cylinder's wafers are too worn and the cylinder needs rebuilding or replacement, with new keys cut to match. We'll tell you which one it is before any work starts. What we won't do is sell you a replacement you don't need.
